Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program

Instructor Training Workshop

February 24, 2012 Denver, CO

The Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program (AFAP) was developed to help the millions of people living with arthritis take control of their disease. As a program Instructor or Leader, you will help change lives; receive specialized training to deliver high-quality exercise and education programs; and become affiliated with the Arthritis Foundation, one of the most highly regarded health not-for-profit organizations in the United States.

The Class

Implement this program using a combination of soothing warm water (83° to 94°F) and gentle movements that help increase joint flexibility and range of motion. The program has been shown to restore and maintain muscle strength, relieve arthritis pain and stiffness, and provides a support system for people with arthritis in your community. Participant’s ability to swim is not required.

Requirements

·   Pool temperature between 83° to 94°F

·   Commit to teaching at least one class series per year (must teach six weeks within six months of training to become certified)

·   Have an affiliation with a facilitythat can host the program

·   ALL new and recertifying Aquatic Leaders and Instructors must pass a swim skill test (ability to swim at least 25 yards using any stroke without stopping; ability to jump into deep water, surface, and either float for a minimum of 10 minutes or tread water for a minimum of 1 minute; and ability to perform the recovery position from face up and face down in shallow and deep water). This skills test is a part of the pool lab for all instructor trainings.

·   CPR is required for all AFAP Leaders and Instructors. Lifeguard or water rescue/safety certification is strongly suggested.

·   Other desirable characteristics include personal or professional experience   working with people with arthritis or disabilities; interest in working with groups; and interest in health, exercise and a proactive approach to health management.

Note: You are strictly forbidden to begin teaching the program until you have attended an AFAP Instructor training, hosted by the Arthritis Foundation.
